Or abdominoplasty. It is an aesthetic surgery that allows you to get a flat stomach and an harmonious belly following changes weight or pregnancy for women.

Surgery consists in restoring tension in the abdomen by removing the damaged skin (distended or stretched) under the navel.

There are two types of abdominal plasties:

– An abdominal plasty without transposition of the umbilicus or abdominal mini-plasty

– An abdominal plasty with transposition of the umbilicus possibly associated with suture of the  abdominal muscles (diastasis cure)

We almost systematically associate a liposuction of the abdomen to our tummy tuck surgeries

In Practice

An abdominal CT scan may be requested before surgery to evaluate the presence of any hernia.

It is necessary to order, prior to surgery, an abdominal support girdle.

The procedure is usually performed under general anesthesia but may be considered in an outpatient basis for the mini-plasty. This requires a pre-anesthetic consultation at least 48 hours before surgery.

In other cases, a conventional hospitalization of 2 to 4 days is necessary.

More information

Is an abdominal plasty a painful procedure?

It all depends on whether abdominoplasty plays on the abdominal muscles.

If this is not the case, the pain is equivalent to that of a liposuction, so quite supportable with mild analgesics.

If an approximation of the abdominal muscles (cure of diastasis) is considered, the pain is much stronger. That is why we perform a local anesthetic troncular block of the abdomen called TAP block before surgery in order to get a perfect analgesia

What are the possible complications of abdominal plasty?

The abdominal mini-plasty is a rapid intervention with rare complications.

Abdominoplasty with transposition of the umbilicus is a heavier procedure that requires careful attention.

The most feared complication is the occurrence of thromboembolic events (phlebitis and pulmonary embolism). This requires preventive measures consisting of early lifting, wearing of compression stockings and use of subcutaneous injections of heparin during the 10 days following surgery.

A hematoma (blood clot) may occur within 2 days of surgery and may lead to surgery.

Lymph effusion occurs in about 10% of the cases. If it is significant, it may require a puncture that is not painful.

Finally, sensitivity issues of the abdominal skin located under the umbilicus are almost systematic after the intervention. They decrease in the year following the procedure.

What are postoperative cares after abdominal plasty?

Care must be rigorous after a tummy tuck.

A nurse will renew the bandaid every 1 to 2 days. At the same time, she will carry out an injection of subcutaneous heparin.

2 blood samples will be needed within 10 days of the operation to control your hemoglobin and platelet count.

Can an abdominal plasty be covered by french health insurance system?

Yes, but in very specific cases.

The following criteria must be met:

– That your abdomen falls on your pubis while standing (mandatory criterion)

– You have recently lost weight

The fact of having 3 children or a caesarean does not imply any management of the abdominoplasty by the french health insurance system.

How much does an abdominal plasty cost?

As part of cosmetic surgery, prices vary from 3600 € for an abdominal mini-plasty to more than 5000 € for a complete abdominoplasty.

If there is a french health insurance system coverage, I will add extra fees of 2300 € which can be taken care of by your complementary health insurance.
