Their expertise in both anatomy and aesthetics ensures they can address the two main goals of facial reconstruction:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Complete removal of the tumor<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Achieving the most discreet aesthetic result possible<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Principles<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The type of skin tumor is diagnosed by your dermatologist through a clinical examination and biopsy. These tumors fall into two main categories:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Benign tumors<\/strong>: such as nevi (moles), histiocytofibromas, hamartomas.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Malignant tumors<\/strong>: including basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma, and malignant melanoma.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Surgical excision follows strict guidelines established by the French National Cancer Institute. For certain cases\u2014especially squamous cell carcinoma or melanoma\u2014a <strong>multidisciplinary consultation meeting (RCP)<\/strong> is required before proceeding with treatment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Our team collaborates with the tumor board of <strong>Saint Louis Hospital (Paris)<\/strong> to ensure coordinated, state-of-the-art care.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To achieve the best possible aesthetic outcome, various reconstructive surgical techniques may be used to replace the skin removed during tumor excision:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Directed healing<\/strong>: Letting the wound heal naturally; often ideal for small facial lesions (nose, forehead).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Direct closure<\/strong>: Suturing the wound along the skin&#8217;s natural tension lines.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Skin grafting<\/strong>: Skin is harvested from a donor area with similar tone and texture and placed over the excised area.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Local flap<\/strong>: Adjacent skin is rotated or moved into the defect, maintaining aesthetic harmony.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Regional flap<\/strong>: For instance, forehead skin is rotated to rebuild part of the nose.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Free flap<\/strong>: Skin from a distant site (e.g. forearm) is transplanted with its own blood vessels and reconnected microsurgically near the defect\u2014reserved for large or advanced tumors, particularly those invading bone.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" src=\"https:\/\/www.plasticiens-paris.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/Chirurgie-cutanee-Reconstruction-faciale-apres-cancer-1024x683.webp\" alt=\"Chirurgie cutanee Reconstruction faciale apres cancer\" class=\"wp-image-1189\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.plasticiens-paris.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/Chirurgie-cutanee-Reconstruction-faciale-apres-cancer-1024x683.webp 1024w, https:\/\/www.plasticiens-paris.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/Chirurgie-cutanee-Reconstruction-faciale-apres-cancer-300x200.webp 300w, https:\/\/www.plasticiens-paris.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/Chirurgie-cutanee-Reconstruction-faciale-apres-cancer-768x512.webp 768w, https:\/\/www.plasticiens-paris.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/Chirurgie-cutanee-Reconstruction-faciale-apres-cancer-1536x1024.webp 1536w, https:\/\/www.plasticiens-paris.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/Chirurgie-cutanee-Reconstruction-faciale-apres-cancer-2048x1366.webp 2048w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">In Practice<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>A <strong>pre-operative consultation<\/strong> with your dermatologist is almost always required.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If necessary, your case is presented at a <strong>multidisciplinary tumor board (RCP)<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Most procedures are performed under <strong>local anesthesia with sedation<\/strong> (neuroleptanalgesia), on an <strong>outpatient basis <\/strong>(3 to 5 hours).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>In some cases, a <strong>short overnight hospital stay<\/strong> may be recommended.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A consultation with the anesthesiologist is required <strong>at least 48 hours before<\/strong> surgery.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Important precautions:<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Stop smoking<\/strong> at least one month before and after the procedure, as it can delay healing.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Avoid aspirin and anti-inflammatory medications<\/strong> in the 10 days prior to surgery.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Healing and recovery:<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Final wound healing typically occurs within <strong>10 to 15 days<\/strong>, at which point sutures are removed.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The <strong>surgical specimen is analyzed<\/strong> and your surgeon will discuss results and post-operative care with your dermatologist.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Further treatments<\/strong> such as radiation therapy may be required depending on the tumor type and margins.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Please note: <strong>Final aesthetic results can only be evaluated at least 6 months post-surgery.<\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Plastic surgeons play a central role in the treatment of skin cancer.
