Touted over the past 3 years as a revolution in breast aesthetics, the use of Macrolane® highly cross-linked hyaluronic acid in aesthetic breast augmentation has been banned by the French Health Products Safety Agency.
It justifies this decision by the potential risk :
- chronic inflammation of the breast due to the need to reinject the product every 18 months
- product diffusion due to its non-encapsulated nature
- discomfort in interpreting mammograms for breast cancer screening
This decision puts an end to a media storm organized by the Qmed laboratory, which presented this product as the end of silicone breast implants.
I always thought it was a huge step backwards, as it didn't offer the security provided by the hermetic envelope of breast implants. I've never used it.
