Anatomical or round breast prosthesis

Anatomical or round breast prosthesis: How to choose your breast prosthesis?

Anatomical breast prostheses have been presented by laboratories as a major evolution inbreast augmentation, offering a more "natural" result.

However, it is perfectly possible to achieve "natural" results with a round breast prosthesis. All you need to do is choose an implant with a moderate or medium projection and play with the fluidity of the silicone gel. The more fluid the gel, the more the implant will take on a natural "pear" shape.

For example, the Motiva laboratory offers smooth, round implants in different ranges, giving an increasingly pear-shaped appearance. These include "Round" for an "apple" effect, Ergonomix 1 and finally Ergonomix 2 or Joy for a more natural result.

Anatomical breast prosthesis: disadvantages

The disadvantage of conventional micro-textured or macro-textured anatomical prostheses is the risk of rotation, estimated at between 8% and 45% according to the latest studies based on high-frequency ultrasound assessments. Rotation alters the aesthetic result and often necessitates re-operation.

We almost never used this type of implant in breast augmentation with prostheses. From 2010 to 2018, however, we used anatomical implants covered with Polytech polyurethane foam (German laboratory). The body invaded the polyurethane, which stabilized the prosthesis in the correct position and normally prevented any rotation.

Why have macro-textured implants been banned in France?

As of 2018, like Allergan macro-textured implants, Silimed polyurethane implants (Brazilian laboratory) were found to have high rates of anaplastic large-cell lymphoma, a rare but serious disease specifically linked to textured breast implants.

Polytech implants seemed to be little affected, but in a wise decision, the ANSM decided in 2019 to ban the sale of macro-textured, polyurethane foam-covered implants in France.

We had decided a year earlier in 2018, as a precautionary measure, to use only smooth, round implants, and since then they have enabled us to achieve completely natural results even in breast reconstruction.
